Story
The documentary series Auf den Schienen des Doppeladlers is a journey along the historic railroad lines of the former Danube Monarchy and takes the viewer to the most important places and the most remote corners of the former Habsburg Empire, which were and still are connected by rail. It was the railroads that filled the vast empire with life, allowing people and goods to circulate and thus making a decisive contribution to the flourishing of trade, industry and tourism.
The fourth part of the documentary series deals with the railroad development of the Alpine region in the Cisleithanian half of the Danube Monarchy. In 1900, a huge Alpine railroad construction program was launched in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy – the Transalpina. In this last major project of the old monarchy, the construction of several railroad lines was tackled simultaneously: the Pyhrnbahn, the Tauernbahn, the Karawankenbahn, the Wocheinerbahn and the Karstbahn.
