Jewels of the Alps – Mountain Lakes in Carinthia

Story

Carinthia is best known for its bathing lakes. But high up, far above the tree line, Austria’s southernmost province has many other treasures to offer: glistening mountain lakes surrounded by picturesque mountain scenery. The documentary “Jewels of the Alps” is a cinematic hike to the most beautiful mountain lakes in the country.

Hundreds of mountain lakes lie like jewels in the vast mountain landscapes of Carinthia. Many of them are relics of the last ice age and are several thousand years old, while others have only been created in recent years and decades as a result of the melting of the glaciers. For his documentary, director Gernot Stadler visited the Gradensee and Wangenitzsee lakes in the Schober group, the Dösener See lake in the Hohe Tauern and the Wolayersee lake in the Carnic Alps.
